so i’ve been keeping a secret. i got the call from nickelodeon that i was a semifinalist back on august 12th! the 30 rock spec i wrote got me in. it was very difficult to write because of the pressure i put on myself. i knew that the spec had to be good enough to get me through to the next round.

i was completely surprised because i wasn’t expecting a possible call until the end of the month like last year when i got the call on sept. 3rd. this year, they were 3 weeks ahead of schedule. i was told i’d have a phone interview in a week. here we go again!

i had my monthly writers group meeting that night but didn’t share the news. last year i told everyone each step of the way. this year, i didn’t want to jinx it. i didn’t tell anyone. not family, not friends, nobody. i decided i’d tell everyone what happened after i found out whether i made it in or not.

  1. Congrats and good luck for the next round! I look forward to hearing more good news and details about your experiences. I think by making the semi-finals two years in a row, that means something and they’ll probably take note of that for the judging.

Out of curiosity, did you submit a different script each year, or was the one from this year just a better, more polished version of the one from your last submission?

    Take care,
    Evan

  2. Congratulations kiyong! First of all THANK YOU for posting your experience last year. You provided tons of insight into what was essentially a black hole of mystery in regards to the selection process for a TV writing fellowship. Your openness gave us aspiring writers someone to empathize with and experience the process through. You definitely deserve the win! Best of luck becoming the next matt hubbard, lol!
