writing recap of 2015, goals for 2016

So 2015 turned out to be a good a pretty good year. I finally got an agent, had meetings, wrote a new pilot, got some good feedback.

Friends of mine had good years as well. They got repped, got staffed, placed in contests and programs. I’m hoping the good momentum continues for everyone this year!

My goals for 2015 were:

1 – Get an agent.
YES

2 – Get staffed on a show.
NO. I had some meetings though.

3 – Write 2 pilots.
SORT OF. I wrote 1 pilot and started an outline of another, so 1.5.

4 – Work on some other creative project: either a feature, a web series, or an animated pitch.
NO. I came up with a bunch of ideas, but nothing that I loved enough to finish.

My goals for 2016 are the same as last year:

1 – Get staffed on a show.

2 – Write 2 pilots.

3 – Create my own content.
I have a couple pilots I like that I think are solid samples, so I want to focus on creating something else that shows my voice, something other than a script.  I’m not sure exactly what form it’ll take, but I want it to be ongoing, like a web series, or comic book, or something.

Hope you have a productive year!

  1. Thank you for sharing your advice! I have a question for you. Do you have a ‘day job’? How do you balance your writing with earning money to survive? Do you set aside time every day for writing or for certain days of the week?

    1. I do have a full time day job. I’ve tried bouts of not working for months at a time, but the stress of no income made it too hard to be creative or productive for me. I don’t write daily or to a schedule, but just try to finish a certain number of scripts a year. Most of my writing is on nights and weekends, but sometimes I’ll use up vacation days to finish something.

  2. Hey! I’m thinking about applying to the Warner Brothers Workshop. I was wondering if you think it’s better to write a a standalone show spec or a serialized spec. Also, they mention that you can submit both a comedy and a drama- do you think that’s beneficial or should I just stick to one? Thanks! Your blog is a great resource!

    1. I don’t think it matters, but if it’s serialized, you can insert a page saying something like, this episode happens in season 3, or even be more specific, in between episodes 4 and 5. I wouldn’t submit a drama and a comedy. I’d pick one, unless you like dramedies, then I guess you can submit to both.
